Depo-Provera Lawsuit

Lawsuit Overview

Women across the country are suing manufacturers of Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) upon receiving devastating diagnoses of brain or spinal tumors known as meningiomas. These women had been injected with Depo-Provera, a hormonal birth control taken as a shot every three months. Plaintiffs claim the drugmakers were aware of Depo-Provera’s risks, but they were never informed. They are pursuing compensation for the drugmakers’ alleged negligence by filing lawsuits.

What is Depo-Provera?

Approved by the FDA in the early 1990s, Depo-Provera, developed by Pfizer Inc., is an injectable form of a contraceptive prescribed to women every 90 days. It is a long-acting progestin-based contraceptive, which is designed to suppress ovulation.

Pfizer Inc.’s later-approved Depo-SubQ Provera injection and other authorized generic versions manufactured by Pharmacia & Upjohn Company LLC, Greenstone LLC, A-S Medication Solutions, Prasco Laboratories, or (in some states) Preferred Pharmaceuticals Inc. provide similar contraceptive solutions for women, but have been linked to serious side-effects.

Depo-Provera carries what is known as a black-box warning—the most serious warning given by the FDA. The labeling highlights potential bone loss and blood clot risks, among other warnings, but has not contained any warnings of the risks for meningioma.

What is the Risk?

Women who were injected with the contraceptive Depo-Provera may be at a five-times greater risk for developing certain brain and spinal tumors (meningiomas), according to an observational study published in the British Medical Journal. Meningioma is a slow-growing tumor, which may grow for years before being detected. Women who received the Depo-Provera shot four or more times (equal to one year of use) may be at risk for developing meningiomas. Women who received Depo-SubQ Provera, or other authorized generic versions of the drug, may also be at risk.
