Settlement Masters Appointed in Camp Lejeune Litigation as Time Winds Down to File a Claim
Days remain to file a Camp Lejeune water contamination injury claim; Federal judges overseeing the litigation select two settlement masters to speed up the settlement process as over 285,000 administrative claims have been filed.
A group of federal U.S. District judges managing the Camp Lejeune water contamination injury claims have appointed two settlement masters to facilitate settlements discussions. The selection of two masters aims to speed up the slow-moving claims resolution process—many veterans and their family members who filed claims suffer grave illnesses, and may not see justice before succumbing to their conditions. The settlement masters will not have the power to adjudicate any issues impacting the litigation.
In August 2022, the passage of the Camp Lejeune Justice Act opened a two-year window for those who were affected by toxic water while serving, living or working on Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. For decades, harmful toxins and chemicals were dumped into the water surrounding the base, unknowingly impacting approximately one million individuals who drank, bathed in, and cooked with the tainted water. These chemicals included oil, fuel, industrial wastewater, degreasers and solvents, and other volatile organic compounds known to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing).
The water contamination at Camp Lejeune has been linked to many different serious, sometimes terminal, injuries, including: but not limited to:
- leukemia
- non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- bladder cancer
- kidney cancer
- lung cancer
- esophageal cancer
- breast cancer
- prostate cancer
- Parkinson’s Disease
- female infertility
- miscarriages
The lawsuit is currently open to anyone who served, lived or worked at Camp Lejeune between 1953 and 1987 for at least 30 days, was exposed to contaminated water, and harmed by such exposure. This includes veterans, civilians and families—even those who, at the time, were exposed to the tainted water in the womb. But the window to file is closing soon - claimants must be filed by August 9, 2024 in order to be eligible for potential compensation.
In the fall of 2023, an Elective Option was announced for Camp Lejeune Justice Act claims, which established a framework for evaluating and settling a limited number of claims based upon certain types of injuries. Very few claimants have qualified for this stringent program.
