Proposed Bill Aims to Protect Farmers, Environment from Pesticides Such as Paraquat

With the introduction of a new bill, legislation announced by New Jersey Senator Cory Booker aims to remove dangerous pesticides within America’s farm system. The bill intends to amend the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, and offer additional protection for farm workers and others who handle certain hazardous chemicals. The bill will add provisioning for registration renewal for many of these pesticides.

Paraquat, a toxic herbicide used to control weed growth, is included among these substances that would be impacted by the bill. Paraquat has been linked to certain health risks; namely the central nervous system disorder Parkinson’s disease. Agricultural workers, gardeners, farmers, and other individuals exposed to paraquat may be at risk for developing the brain disorder. Many countries have banned use of the pesticide.

Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of these individuals that were exposed to paraquat and subsequently developed Parkinson’s disease. Plaintiffs claim that they were not warned of the alleged dangerous health risks associated with the herbicide.
