JPML Panel Set to Assess Paraquat Lawsuit Consolidation
On May 27, 2021, a panel of judges is expected to weigh in on over a dozen lawsuits filed against makers of paraquat-containing agricultural herbicides and pesticides. The cases may be consolidated into a multi-district litigation (MDL) for pretrial and discovery purposes before one judge, potentially in the Northern District of California.
The blue-dyed chemical, used for decades across the globe to contain weed and grass growth in commercial agriculture, has been linked to the development of Parkinson’s disease. Paraquat has since been banned from many countries. Former users diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, including agricultural workers and handlers of the controversial chemical, allege that manufacturers failed to properly warn consumers about the dangerous risk.
