Another Day, Another GM Recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Saturday that General Motors is recalling another 46,873 vehicles for defective ignition systems that can be knocked into the off position, powering down a vehicle and disabling safety features like airbags. The latest ignition recall covers 2008 and 2009 Pontiac G8s and 2011 through 2013 Chevrolet Caprice police cars.
Total GM recalls in 2014 now top 30 million worldwide. This includes more than 2.6 million vehicles with faulty ignition switches that can turn an engine’s power off when bumped by a driver’s knee, causing the engine to shut down and deactivating airbags. So far, 23 deaths have been attributed to the ignition defect in other GM vehicles according to attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who runs the company’s compensation program.
On October 4, 2014, the NHTSA announced GM’s recall 10,005 2004-07 Cadillac CTS-Vs and 2005-07 Cadillac STS-Vs citing the potential for their fuel pump modules to overheat. In a third action announced the same day, GM is also recalling 304 2014 Chevrolet Sonic hatchbacks for a loose electrical connection in the steering column.
The three new recalls followed fast on the heels of the prior day’s news release that GM is recalling over half a million vehicles including Cadillac and Saab SUVs.
