Activist Group and Farmworkers Fight Paraquat Approval in 9th Circuit Petition
In late September 2021, a group of farmworkers and environmental activists challenged the Environmental Protection Agency’s re-approval of controversial herbicide Paraquat. The groups filed a lawsuit against the agency over its July decision to approve continued use of the chemical. Plaintiffs claim that this puts them and other farmworkers at risk for developing Parkinson’s disease and violates the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act.
Exposure to Paraquat, a toxic herbicide used to control wees and grass growth, has been linked to Parkinson’s disease. Paraquat has been used in the U.S. for decades, but has been banned in many countries.
While product liability cases have been filed and consolidated in the Southern District of Illinois, the plaintiffs in this case—which include The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research—have petitioned the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit to review the decision to allow continued use of Paraquat.
