3M Combat Arms Earplug MDL Swells
The number of plaintiffs filing claims against 3M over its defective Combat Arms earplugs has grown to a staggering 230,000 in two years. Consolidated in a Florida federal court, the multi-district litigation encompasses cases from military veterans alleging hearing problems associated with 3M’s dual-ended earplugs. The product was issued to U.S. service men and women from 2003 to 2015, despite 3M allegedly knowing they were defective.
One of the reasons the MDL has grown so large may be due to the sheer volume of people that were impacted. According to Reuters, more than 2 million servicemembers were deployed between 2001 and 2015. The product was widely used among veterans in Afghanistan and Iraq. Reuters also notes that hearing damage is the single leading cause of disability reported to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
