Paraquat MDL Progresses as Judge Denies Defendants’ Main Argument
In February 2022, the Paraquat MDL took a few steps forward after the judge presiding over the litigation rejected the defendants’ primary argument. Defendants in the litigation, which include Syngenta Crop. Protection and Chevron USA, Inc., had argued that many of the plaintiffs’ claims should be time-barred. The toxic chemical has been used widely by agriculture workers, farmers, and gardeners since the 1960s as an herbicide, though has been banned from many countries.
Hundreds of cases have been filed in the Paraquat MDL, with plaintiffs seeking damages after claiming their Parkinson’s disease diagnoses were the result of exposure to Paraquat. Studies have linked Paraquat exposure to neurodegenerative processes that may increase the risk of developing the central nervous system disorder.
